Healthy Habit Heroes: Gabriela’s Story

Four months ago, Gabriela had given up. She was 206 pounds and felt fatigued, self-conscious and unhappy. Her cholesterol was high and her blood sugar test put her in the prediabetic range. She wanted to get healthy, but didn’t know where to start.

 

I’ve paid a lot of money for fad diets, gimmicks, personal training and even dangerous diet pills, but I never kept the weight off. None of those things got to the core of my issue—my relationship with food and why I crave what I crave.

Then I found Yes Health—or more accurately, Yes Health found me. I took a quick survey through my health insurance to see if I qualified. I was immediately interested in the app. I’m a technology-oriented person and I’m also very busy, so I don’t have time for in-person weekly meetings. It sounded like something I could use, so I decided, why not try it?

The Yes Health coaches have been so helpful. This program wouldn’t work without them. From their one-on-one advice to exercise tips and recipes, the coaches are knowledgeable and really care about my success. My favorite thing is being at the grocery store and sending a coach an image of a product and getting an immediate answer about whether it’s a healthy option or not. 

I didn’t understand what healthy eating was before. Using Yes Health’s food journal  is more than getting a “score.” It’s learning why a meal is “yellow” instead of “green.” Before, I would eat a bagel for breakfast and think I was doing okay. Then the coaches explained why it’s so important to have protein in the morning. They made simple suggestions, like using almond butter instead of cream cheese. The changes never felt impossible and they’ve made a big difference. I’m learning as I go with gentle reminders from the coaches, and the gradual shifts in my eating habits now feel like second nature.

My energy has increased and I’m not feeling the mid-morning hollowness in the pit of my stomach that once made me irritable. As a teacher, I need to be alert and think on my feet. My brain feels clearer and I’ve noticed my attitude is more positive. I didn’t realize how much food affected my mood until I started to make changes. I love what I eat. I’m not depriving myself of anything, just choosing healthier options.

I had never combined exercise with healthy eating, which is why I wasn’t successful losing and keeping weight off in the past. Exercise isn’t something that comes naturally to me. I’ve been pretty sedentary my whole life, so it’s challenging to find an activity I enjoy, instead of it feeling like another chore. I live in a rural area, so even though I love to walk it’s not easy to find good places nearby. I also like the elliptical machine and bikes at the gym, but it’s a 25-minute drive from my house. It helps to have the coaches’ support and encouragement to keep me on track.

I feel like I’ve got the food part down. I’m working on upping my exercise so I can meet my weight-loss goal. (Yes Health even sent me a digital scale that connects to the app to automatically record my progress.) So far I’ve lost 14 pounds and have kept them off. Just a few more to go!
